Can you tell us about your background and how you started working at Satomi Kawakita Jewelry (SKJ)?
"I’ve been in the jewelry industry since 2016. I joined Satomi Kawakita Jewelry in 2021 as a studio manager and transitioned to Operations Manager in early 2023. In this role, I oversee both the sales and studio teams"
What drew you to SKJ?
"Before SKJ, I worked for a small jewelry brand, but I felt that I didn't have as much of a personal connection. I wanted to feel a deeper connection to the pieces, something I’d naturally wear and love. When I discovered SKJ, I was drawn to SKJ's unique designs and the company’s organized structure. It felt like the perfect fit."
What were your first impressions of SKJ?
"The studio itself made a huge impression on me. It’s a beautiful space with original hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and great ventilation—a refreshing change from the cramped spaces common in the jewelry industry. Meeting Satomi during the interview was memorable too. She came across as serious and a bit hard to read, but I’ve since learned that’s just her personality. We’ve developed a strong working relationship over time."
How would you describe the company culture at SKJ?
"SKJ feels like a little gem in New York City. The all-female team is supportive, friendly, and respectful, which is rare in such a competitive city. There’s no gossip or negativity here, which really stands out compared to my previous experiences."
What do you think sets SKJ apart for its customers?
"SKJ’s customers value the uniqueness and craftmanship of our pieces. They see our jewelry as more than just accessories—they see it as art. The handcrafted nature and delicate details make our designs stand out from mass-produced products."
Do you own any pieces from SKJ?
"Yes, I do. My engagement ring is a triple hexagon design by Satomi, and I absolutely love it. I also admire the Brown Diamond Galaxy Ring, which is such a stunning, eye-catching piece."
What aspects of working at SKJ do you enjoy the most?
"We have a really great team that's friendly, hard working and we all build each other up. There's no gossip or meanness. And I also love that we can all just have fun together, from team lunches, dinners, Halloween contests and Christmas parties. We do fun things throughout the year that I feel like bring us closer and help us to have a good time"
How would you describe Satomi’s leadership style?
"Satomi strikes a balance between seriousness and playfulness. She’s respectful, open to suggestions, and truly cares about her employees and customers. It’s refreshing to work with someone who’s so dedicated but also knows how to have fun."
What are the core values emphasized at SKJ?
"High-quality design and product, respect for team members, and care for our customers. These values are evident in everything we do, from our internal teamwork to the thoughtful details we put into our packaging and customer experience"
Any final thoughts about working at SKJ?
