SKJ & ME – Passion | Margarita’s Story

Margarita, SKJ’s talented head bench jeweler, has always had a love for crafting, whether it was painting or sewing with her grandmother as a child. Originally from Colombia, her journey eventually led her to discover her true passion for jewelry at SKJ. She values the team’s unique perspectives, creating a collaborative environment that celebrates everyone’s background. This diversity fuels our creativity and helps our customers find their perfect fit.

“We come from different countries and speak different languages, but we all come together. Satomi is so passionate about jewelry, and she conveys that passion to us, uniting us all through our shared love for the craft.” - Margarita

You’re currently working at SKJ as a studio bench jeweler. Can you tell us more about your role?

I am the head bench jeweler at Satomi Kawakita Jewelry. I’ve been with the company for almost three years now—I started in October 2021. My role involves training, overseeing studio operations, maintaining tools, and ensuring the highest quality standards for our jewelry pieces. I also assist with bench tests for new jewelers and help refine production processes.

How did you learn about SKJ, and what drew you to the company?

I’m originally from Colombia, and I’ve lived in the U.S. for 11 years. After graduating in June 2021, I was searching for a job that aligned with my passion for jewelry. I found SKJ through LinkedIn. The job description stood out because it emphasized a passion for jewelry and a commitment to long-term growth, which felt like a perfect match for me. I was nervous about applying since it had been a while since I last worked in jewelry, but I decided to take the chance. After a rigorous bench test and interviews, I joined the team.

What is your background in jewelry?

I studied industrial design in Colombia, where I also took jewelry courses. I began my jewelry career in 2013, working with my professor and later for a multinational jewelry company in Bogotá. After moving to the U.S., I initially pursued a different path and was even accepted into a nursing program. However, once I started working at SKJ, I realized that jewelry is my true passion, and I decided to fully commit to this profession.

How would you describe SKJ’s designs compared to others you’ve worked on?

Satomi’s designs are incredibly unique. They’re delicate, elegant, and have an organic touch that sets them apart. Her pieces are not just jewelry; they’re artistic expressions. Working on designs that I resonate with makes my work feel less like a job and more like a fulfilling hobby.

Can you tell us about the culture at SKJ?

Teamwork and respect are core values here. We all come from diverse backgrounds, which enriches our collaboration. During peak seasons, everyone pitches in to ensure deadlines are met. It’s a very supportive and collaborative environment. We also celebrate milestones like birthdays, Halloween, and Christmas, which fosters a strong sense of community.

What do you enjoy most about working at SKJ?

I love the organized and clean environment. Everything has a specific place, and we maintain a high level of cleanliness and efficiency. The friendliness among team members and Satomi’s leadership make it a joy to work here. She’s not only passionate and creative but also open to suggestions, which makes us feel valued.

What do you believe is the mission of your brand?

I feel that somehow Satomi’s pieces help celebrate a special moment in your life, whether it's a wedding or a birthday or simply a personal reward. They help you stop time and put that emotions and feelings in one piece. I feel like her jewelry truly brings happiness to people.

What is your favorite SKJ piece?

My favorite design is the Little Gold Fleck Necklace. It’s a delicate piece with gold flecks melted into the chain. It’s definitely on my wishlist for the future!

What’s your message for Satomi Kawakita Jewelry?

I feel incredibly proud to be part of this team. I hope to continue growing with the company and contributing to its success. SKJ’s jewelry brings happiness to people, and I’m honored to be part of that journey.
