Doug and Nancy are a couple with an artist’s eye and a deep appreciation for aesthetics, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. Their connection with Satomi’s work is rooted in the personal touch and artistry that define our jewelry. Doug resonates with Satomi’s respect for materials, while Nancy cherishes the soulful, quiet beauty in every piece and the way she can curate her favorite jewelry to suit her mood.
"What I appreciate about the rings is that they respond to each other, whether they’re geometric, textured, or hammered. Sometimes, even the One-of-a-Kind rings that look almost identical have subtle variations. It’s a beautiful way to showcase them." - Doug
How did you and Satomi meet?
Nancy: Jackie Greenberg, a friend involved in design, introduced us. I was captivated by Jackie’s collection of jewelry, and she introduced me to Satomi’s pieces back in 2008.
Doug: I remember when Nancy brought it up. I was struck by the craftsmanship and sensitivity Satomi puts into every piece. There was a handmade quality to it — a connection to the maker that felt unique.
What stands out to you about Satomi’s craftsmanship?
Doug: There’s a sensitivity in her work, a respect for the materials, whether it’s the metal or the stones. It’s rare to find jewelry that feels so handcrafted. You can feel her dedication to artistry, which resonates with me as an artist.
Nancy: Absolutely. There’s an authenticity in her pieces. I’ve seen many stacking brands, but none carry the soul that SKJ does. It’s like every piece has a story, crafted rather than manufactured.
Has SKJ played a role in any significant moments in your lives?
Nancy: Definitely. Over the years, as we navigated life changes — raising our kids, moving, and more — Satomi’s pieces remained a constant. We even gifted SKJ jewelry to our daughter as she grew up. Her work has been with us through so many milestones; it holds a special place in our lives.
Doug: For me, there's loyalty to SKJ. We’ve built a connection with her work that feels warm and personal, more than just transactional. It’s about trust in her consistency and attention to detail.
You mentioned stacking rings. What draws you to them?
Nancy: I’ve always liked the idea of stacking. Her rings are perfect for it — you can mix and match to reflect your mood or style. Stacking lets me create a unique look every day.
Doug: Stacking her rings is like curating a mini collection. You can contrast textures, shapes, or stick with similar styles. It’s a way of expressing yourself through different combinations.
Doug, I hear you have a connection with Japanese culture?
Doug: Yes, we’ve visited Japan many times for work, and it’s always been a significant part of my artistic journey. Satomi’s designs carry a Japanese aesthetic sensitivity, which we both appreciate deeply. It’s another layer that makes her work meaningful to us.
How would you describe your relationship with SKJ?
Nancy: Effortless and soulful. Her pieces feel like they’re made with purpose and care, and that’s rare in today’s world.
Doug: There’s a warmth and respect that Satomi brings to the brand. I feel loyal to her because she stays true to her artistry, focusing on the quality of each piece rather than scaling up for mass production. It’s refreshing.
Nancy: Satomi’s customer service has also been a highlight. She’s always been thoughtful in our interactions, even if it’s just helping Doug find the perfect piece for a holiday gift.
Finally, any message for SKJ or Satomi?
Nancy: We wish Satomi continued success. Her hard work has created something beautiful, and I hope she continues to share her artistry with the world.
Doug: I respect her dedication and the personal connection she brings to each piece. It’s what keeps us coming back year after year.
